Hard To Beet checks out the Food4Wealth system
It’s taken me a while to write this Food4Wealth review of Jonathan White’s labour-saving, time-saving, easy vegetable gardening method. I purchased it some time ago and, ironically, have been too busy working on my vegetable plot to investigate and try out the system. Typical!
First, here’s the man himself with a few words…
Seems like a nice guy, but what’s the Food4Wealth system like?
Well, I’ve just spent a few days reading through the pdf and watching the 14 DIY videos that are included in the package. The bottom line is that even a die-hard gardener like myself found quite a lot of new ideas and tips which I shall be implementing this year.
What do you get in the Food4Wealth download?
Here’s a quick rundown of what you get for your money:
- An 80 page manual in pdf format (can be opened on any type of computer) entitled, ‘Everyone’s Guide to Growing Food Anywhere’
- A 7 page project plan (again in pdf format) entitled, ‘Your Project Plan for Growing Food Anywhere’.
- 14 videos in .flv (flash) format
The whole lot costs (as of January 2012) $39.97, which is about £27 in erm… real money!
Manual and Project Plan chapters
Here’s a list of the manual’s chapters:
- Foreword
- Introduction (looks at why the Food4Wealth system is so unique, manageable and self perpetuating)
- Dimensions and Site Selection (basic construction advice)
- Construction of the Food4Wealth plot (includes a handy section on adapting these methods if you already have a vegetable garden, like I do!)
- Composting (one of my favourite topics!)
- Planting and propogation (includes advice on what to plant and where to get your plants from)
- Care of your Food4Wealth plot (watering and weeding tips)
- Top 10 plants (a practical list with detailed information about which veggies to get started with for maximum effect)
- Seasons (all year round tips and advice to care for your crop)
- Mini Food4Wealth plot (if you live in a flat or have minimal space this section has tips on adapting the system to container growing)
- Food4Wealth fruit farm (loads of fruit from a small area!)
- Summary
- Quick reference guide
- About the author
Quite a comprehensive manual, isn’t it?
The Project Plan breaks everything down into a very handy grid that summarises what you need to do:
- Setting up
- Maintaining
- Checklist
- Materials

I have to say, you certainly seem to get your money’s worth with all this lot.
My Food4Wealth Review
I like the common sense approach behind this vegetable growing system, especially if you have little time to maintain a larger vegetable plot.
This gardening method needs very little space and the minimum of effort. This is great if you simply want to supplement your diet with some healthy, organic veggies. The methods that Jonathan outlines will even work on a balcony or patio.
You can have food all year round and in all kinds of climates. the system relies on ‘ecological’ gardening’ rather than ‘traditional gardening’.
In other words, the vegetables that you grow help each other to thrive by creating a micro-climate which is sheltered from the elements and can resist pests at the same time.
The whole method relies on a system of ‘layers’ (newspaper, hay, etc) in which you grow your vegetables. No digging is required and this is what initially grabbed my attention (especially as I’ve got a bad back!).
You do need to maintain a substantial supply of compost in order to keep the plot healthy and full of minerals. However, this isn’t a problem and is a great way to recycle your kitchen and household waste. Have a look at our page on how to compost.
It’s the perfect system for anybody wanting a ‘quick start’ to growing their own veg and without lots of hard digging! It’s relatively cheap to buy and is available as an instant download. Once your veggies start growing, you can cut back on your grocery bills and claw back the expenditure!
In particular, I love the idea of allowing your vegetables to self-seed and grow in a ‘natural’ way. It sounds contrary to many things that I’ve been taught but, I have to say, it makes perfect sense and I’m looking forward to comparing the results with my more traditional veg plot which uses a rotation system.
I’m trying out the method in a small corner of my garden (my neighbour has just given me half a dozen wooden pallets which I’m going to chop up and use for the borders of the veg plot.
So, I hope you enjoyed my Food4Wealth review and let me know if you have any questions about whether it will work for you, whether you’re based in the UK or elsewhere.
