Sprouting Seeds: Fresh and Nutritious

Sprouting seeds is something that everybody should do as it’s a great way to get useful nutrition into your body… and it’s really easy to do and is one of the best healthy foods you can grow.

Now I have to admit that I don’t fo this as much as I should, but after watching the ‘How To Make Fresh Sprouts With Sprouting Seeds’ video, I was given a new lease of life and I’ll certainly be giving it a try during the Summer months.

There are many different seeds that can be sprouted:

  • Fenugreek
  • Buckwheat
  • Red Clover
  • Chia
  • Alfalfa
  • Lentils
  • Broccoli
  • Mustard

How To Sprout Seeds

Sprouting Method 1

Sprouting SeedsRed Clover is particularly good for sprouting and is very nutritious, tastes great and is easy to get hold of in shops and stores.

The simplest sprouting method is to use a quart mason jar and a round sprout screen. The screen fits inside the lid.

Put 4 tablespoons of Red Clover seeds into the jar and add some water to rinse the seeds.

The add a cup of water to soak the seeds (about a quarter of the jar). Leave on a window ledge for 4-8 hours or overnight.

Next, strain out the water, add some more water, swirl and pour it out. Do this twice a day until they finish sprouting.

The whole process takes about 4 days and it’s best to leave the jar lying horizontal if you can.

After 4 days, pour the sprouts into a bowl and eat in salads or add to sandwiches.

Sprouting Method 2

Sprout Man’s Hemp Sprout Bag (there’s got to be a joke there!).

Like method 1, soak the seeds (such as Red Lentils) for 4-8 hours in a jar and at the same time, pre-moisten one of the hemp bags.

Pour the sprouts into the bag, rinse it and then hang the bag on a hook and let it drain into a container.

Then as with the jar method, submerge the bag in water twice a day for about 30 seconds and hang back up again.

The bag allows air to circulate and this can help the sprout-rate.

Also, the bags are fairly inexpensive and can be used over and over again and is no more work than the jar sprouting method.

Sprouting Method 3

The Miracle Sprouter method (have a look for the sprouting kit on mountainroseherbs.com).

This is a great way to sprout seeds if you want the absolutely easiest method or you are really a sprout aficionado!

Add the seeds onto one of the trays and then add water (it trickles down slowly). Empty the bottom tray which will eventually be full of water.

After about 5 days the sprouts can be rinsed and eaten or refrigerated until you need them.

This method also allows you to sprout several types of seeds all at the same time, so it’s very efficient and cuts down on time.

Sprouting Conclusions!

So, there you have it – easy to do, healthy and great fun as well!

All in all, a great addition to the vegetable garden.

  1. I wish I had more than just a window planter, but that is the draw back of living in an apartment.

I don’t see that as a problem at all. There’s loads you can grow indoors and when it comes to sprouting seeds, it’s not a disadvantage in the slightest.
