Woodland Trust

Woodland TrustI’m a huge supporter of the Woodland Trust and believe that as a society we’ve gone ‘wrong’ with our thinking about ‘green areas’.

Let me explain…

In the UK, we’re building more and more houses and destroying ‘green belt’ land. The UK government says that we need more housing but refuses to acknowledge that we need ‘drain-off’ areas when we get the inevitable downpours that seem to plague us at the moment.

More houses, more concrete, less drain-off, more flooding!

It’s  a simple fact and I live in Malton (North Yorkshire) which has had dreadful floods in the past that have ruined lives. It’s obvious what needs to be done, but we don’t do the right thing!

Why?

Well, I’ll leave you to speculate on market forces, but the point of my post was to highlight the Woodland Trust’s ‘Help Us Plant Trees For Free This Spring‘ campaign.

I’m lucky to have many Woodland Trust woods near to where I live and I’ve planned to leave a substantial legacy in my Will to this worthy charity.

Whatever you think, please spend a few minutes contemplating YOUR lifestyle and the impact you have on the world around you.

  1. Thanks for this Alan, a nice post! I hope you enjoy planting your trees next season!
I thought you might like to know that we do quite a lot of work around woods and water and there’s a new publication out aimed at the farming community (http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/en/campaigning/our-views-and-policy/water/Pages/quality-quantity.aspx) – you might find the Water Report interesting too!
Thanks also for your very kind comments, the Trust can only do what we do with help from our supporters – together we can all be the voice trees need :)

  2. Thanks for the comment, Kaye, and the link to the Water Report. It makes interesting reading and should make folks sit up and think about the importance of trees.

In fact, I think I’ll write a short post and try and direct my readers to the report.

Meanwhile, when we get a fine day, I’m off to my favourite WT wood, Hackfall, over towards Masham. It’s a magical place that everybody should visit.

    Thanks again, Kaye.
